From Garage Owner to NHS Hero: Mark’s Inspiring Career Change at 58
Posted on 25th June 2025
At 58, most people are winding down their careers – but not Mark Skipworth. Instead, he’s just getting started in a brand new chapter that’s touching lives in ways he never imagined.

Mark, a proud grandfather and devoted partner of 40 years, spent most of his life running a successful family garage business in Peterborough alongside his later father. The business, built on hard work and a dedicated team of 15 employees, earned a stellar reputation in the local community.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Mark’s quick thinking helped the business pivot rapidly. Prioritising support for NHS workers, particularly at the local hospital, became a mission. But the personal loss of his father during that time triggered a moment of reflection – and ultimately, a bold decision.
“I realised I wanted a change”, Mark says. “The public sector had always been a passion of mine. I was a Special Constable in my twenties and always felt a strong pull towards the emergency services or the NHS”
When an opportunity to become an NHS Reservist, Mark took the leap – and hasn’t looked back since.
Now working on the brain rehabilitation ward at Lincoln Hospital, Mark plays a vital role in helping patients regain the daily routines many of us take for granted. Drawing on his life experience and people skills, he has become an integral part of a compassionate and skilled healthcare team.

“I’ve met some incredible doctors and nurses, and I am constantly inspired by the patients I meet” he says. “I’m honoured to be part of such an amazing team. Every day, I learn something new – and hopefully bring a smile or two along the way”
Mark’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. He was recently selected to represent the Talent Academy and Lincolnshire NHS Reservists at a special event to celebrate those working in Education and Skills at Buckingham Palace – an experience he describes as unforgettable.
“I’m incredibly proud to be part of the Lincolnshire NHS Reservists Team,” he says. “Making this change was the best decision I ever made.”
Marks journey is proof that it’s never too late to follow your calling – and that even the biggest changes can lead to the most rewarding outcomes.
