  • Entry Requirements
Level 2 - Healthcare Science Assistant
Qualifications Required
  • Must be 16+ and employed in an appropriate role
  • Apprentices must achieve Level 1 English and Maths, and attempt Level 2 before gateway.

Core Units

• Professional practice and Good Scientific Practice (GSP)
• Person‑centred care and communication
• Health, safety and security
• Technical scientific skills (routine tests, sample handling, equipment prep)
• Data recording and information governance

Level 3 – Laboratory Technician
Qualifications Required

• Entry requirements set by employers; typically GCSEs inc. English, Maths and Science. (Skills England: no mandatory qualification requirements beyond standard apprenticeship English/Maths)

Level 4 – Healthcare Science Associate
Qualifications Required
  • Must be employed within an appropriate role
  • English and Maths Level 2

• Technical investigations and diagnostic testing
• Quality standards and protocol maintenance
• Equipment and data management

Level 5 – Assistant Practitioner
Qualifications Required
  • Must be employed within an appropriate role
  • English and Maths Level 2

• Holistic assessment and person‑centred care
• Clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
• Communication, MDT working and safeguarding
• Risk management and infection control
• Leadership, teaching and supervision

Level 5 – Technician Scientist
Qualifications Required
  • Must be 16+ and employed in a relevant clinical setting (NHS, private, community, hospital, military) to complete required workplace competencies
  • English and Maths Level 2 required; employers may specify Level 3 science qualifications.

• Data collection, analysis and interpretation
• Scientific problem‑solving and evaluation
• Ethics, safety and regulatory compliance
• Scientific communication (specialist and nonspecialist)
• Project management principles

Level 6 – Biomedical Scientist
Qualifications Required

• Must complete an HCPC‑approved degree OR IBMS Certificate of Competence, enabling HCPC registration.

• Clinical science knowledge (infection, cellular, blood sciences)
• Laboratory diagnostic techniques and QA
• Data interpretation and reporting
• Advanced laboratory technologies (automation, microscopy, molecular)
• HCPC professional and ethical practice

Level 6 – Healthcare Science Practitioner
Qualifications Required
  •  Qualification delivered as an integrated degree (BSc Healthcare Science). English/Maths Level 2 required.

• SOP development and quality systems
• Leadership, supervision and decision‑making
• Patient‑facing communication and MDT work

Level 6 – Laboratory Scientist
Qualifications Required

• Employers set requirements; typically 5 GCSEs including English, Maths and Science + relevant A‑levels or Level 3 science qualification. (From Skills England employer expectations)
